How to Make the Most Out of Your Tuscan Adventure

Most of those who come to Tuscany will find that there’s something for everyone to enjoy in this breathtaking region. Whether you want to shop ‘til you drop or taste some of the world’s most incredible wines, this is the perfect place to spend your next holiday.

With so many amazing options and often so little time, it could be worthwhile to plan your trip out carefully. Each location has something special to offer, so why not find out which parts of Tuscany are a must-visit during your stay before you set off?

The beauty of nature

One of the things that many people already know about Tuscany is that it’s full of natural beauty. Most of those who imagine the region will picture the picturesque landscapes, rows of cypress trees and rolling hills – so when you visit, you’ll likely want to make sure that you get a look at some of these views for yourself.

Visitors are encouraged to take a slow stroll or scenic drive through the countryside of Val d’Orcia; one of the most incredible landscapes on earth. However, it’s important to note that there’s more than just the countryside to love here.

You could easily lose yourself in the enchanting forests in the Casentino National Park, or spend hours gazing upon the beauty of the Apuan Alps – and these are just two examples. With all this and much more to see, lovers of nature will certainly fall in love with Tuscany.

The stunning architecture

Many people love the natural vistas that Tuscany has to offer, but we’re certain that nobody will be able to overlook the magnificent structures that can be found in this part of Italy, too.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a great example of a majestic building – and while most people know of this structure because it’s iconic for not standing completely straight, the tower itself is actually a phenomenal piece of architecture. There are plenty of other interesting buildings for you to check out; from the medieval structures in Siena, to the entirety of Pienza.

There are a number of iconic landmarks here in this part of Italy that you’re sure to want to visit, like the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Ponte Vecchio, the Medici Villas and Gardens, and the Towers of San Gimignano. These are just a few of the sites that you’ll likely want to fit in during your stay.

Many people will know that Florence is home to a wide variety of amazing cathedrals, a few of which are:

  • Santo Spirito Church
  • The Church of Santa Croce
  • San Lorenzo Church
  • Florence Cathedral
  • San Miniato al Monte Church

The incredible history

Almost every town and village in Tuscany holds an ancient beauty with traces of the region’s long and interesting history, so if you’re keen to not just learn more about the past, but immerse yourself in it; this is the place to be.

There are many great Etruscan archaeological sites to explore here and a variety of great museums, too. Why not check out an ancient landmark like the Necropolis of Pianacce, or visit the Archaeological Museum in Sarteano to see some of the many amazing items that have been uncovered here?

You could also visit one of the many medieval towns, such as Siena or San Gimignano. You’re sure to feel like you’ve taken a step back in time while exploring these incredible locations, thanks to the many wonderful landmarks and structures in residence – there’s barely ever a modern building in sight.

You could also learn more about the Renaissance in locations like Florence, as there are a variety of amazing buildings and works of art that hail from this period of time.

The art of Tuscany

Speaking of art, you won’t want to miss out on the many fantastic masterpieces that can be found right here in Tuscany.

Any art lover will be pleased to find that they could easily spend hours in one of the many amazing galleries and art museums, such as the Uffizi Gallery (home to a variety of Renaissance and Mannerism-based artworks), the Bargello (which has some truly magnificent sculptures), and even the outstanding frescoes in the Florentine churches.

The architecture in Florence is also remarkable – although the same can be said about any part of Tuscany. You could easily be inspired by the many paintings and structures to create some art of your own!

Also, did you know that some of history’s greatest artists came from Tuscany? This includes talented individuals like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Giovanni da Verrazzano – but these are just a few from a long list of names.

The gorgeous wines

Anybody who considers themselves to be a wine connoisseur will need to try a few of the incredible beverages produced here in Tuscany. Some of the world’s most renowned red wines come from this region – and there are a variety of amazing Tuscan vineyards and wineries for you to explore.

This part of Italy has been dedicated to producing some of the finest imaginable wines since Etruscan times – and if you come for a visit, you’ll soon see that this legacy still lives today.

Chianti is one of the greatest wine regions in Tuscany, so you are likely to want to have a taste of one the great Sangiovese-based wines that are produced here. Other amazing locations to enjoy a spot of wine tasting include Montepulciano, Brunello, Bolgheri and Montalcino – although you’re likely to find vineyards and authentic wineries in abundance.

Delicious Tuscan cuisine

For anyone visiting the region of Tuscany, fine dining is a must. No matter where you are in this part of Italy, you’re sure to find an excellent restaurant with a variety of dishes for you to enjoy.

Florence is known to have some of the most incredible restaurants and trattorias in the region, as well as food markets. You could also introduce your tongue to the unique flavours in Siena and Chianti, both of which have a variety of affettati (lunch meats) for you to try, as well as a whole host of meat-based meals and antipasti dishes. You could also try some traditional fish dishes too, if you go closer to the Tuscan coast.

The best part about all this is that you’ll often be able to find a truly spectacular meal in any part of the region, so no matter what you’re doing during your trip, you’re likely to always have access to something tasty to eat.

Countless shopping opportunities

The streets of Florence are lined with a wide variety of shops; from little boutiques, to luxury brand stores. Anyone who loves the idea of exploring stunning streets and spending a day shopping will be happy to want to pay a visit to this part of Tuscany.

There are many great shopping outlets near Florence, many of which will offer quality products for fair prices. The Mall is one of the most popular outdoor outlets in the area and here you’ll be able to find products from brands like Tom Ford, Armani and so many more. Gucci and Prada both have their own two storey buildings, so you’ll certainly want to spend a few hours shopping there, too.

Barberino Designer Outlet has a number of great labels on offer; from big names, to more affordable options. There are 100 different stores for you to choose from here, with Jean Paul Gaultier, Hugo Boss and Cavalli being a few of the better known ones.

It’s not all about the big brand stores, though. You could easily enjoy one of the many amazing markets too, such as the antique market in Arezzo, which is held every first Saturday of each month.

You could even go jewellery shopping on Ponte Vecchio – a souvenir from this iconic medieval bridge is sure to bring back fond memories of your trip for years to come. As you can see, Tuscany is a must-visit location for any shopaholic.
